Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) refers to teaching English to students whose first language is not English.

If you want to travel worldwide and find a job which is fun and allows you to support yourself during your stay and travel further, being a TEFL teacher is the option most people choose. The demand for English teachers across the globe continues to increase, and since ESL jobs are contract based, there is always a demand and plenty of jobs available.

TEFL teachers are needed in every single country including English speaking ones. Jobs can be either within the state school system, or privately, e.g., in an after-hours language school or with a tutor. Students in an English-speaking immigrant country are generally people who have moved either temporarily for school or work, or permanently to begin a new life. Employers prefer native English speaking TEFL teachers however there are still many roles available for fluent English speakers.

Today, English is the third most popular mother language in the world, with an estimated 350-400 million native speakers. English is also used globally as a lingua franca or common tongue by a staggering number of non-native English speakers around the word, with an estimated almost two billion people – a quarter of the world’s population – now having at least some basic English competence in speaking and/or writing.

Getting TEFL certified will widen your job opportunities worldwide, for example:

  • English teaching in public and private schools or as a language instructor

  • Private tutoring

  • Teaching business English in companies

  • Volunteering all around the world

  • Taking part in government-run programmes (such as the Peace Corps for US citizens)
